What Do All Those Electric Vehicle Terms Mean?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are the fastest-growing segment of the automotive industry – but they’re not all alike. As they evolve, there are different ways of powering them, and those terms can be confusing. Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): This is probably the most common EV these days, and you can find them in models like the Toyota Sienna. The hybrid runs on an electric propulsion system paired with a typical internal combustion engine. Drivers get better fuel economy than a regular vehicle, and the HEV doesn’t have to be plugged in to recharge.

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): As its name suggests, this is an EV powered solely by a rechargeable electric battery pack (think of it like a smartphone on wheels). A BEV doesn’t require gas, but like your phone, will need to be plugged in to charge up the battery.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV): Consider this the best combo of all available technology. The PHEV has a traditional combustion engine, but it also uses a rechargeable battery. Unlike the full hybrid, it can run completely on the electric battery (mainly for shorter distances). You’ll have to both add gas and charge it up to get the most out of a PHEV.

Fuel Cell Vehicle or EV (FCV/FCEV): This is the most sophisticated of the EVs, but also the least available right now. The fuel cell is powered by hydrogen fuel and a small battery that then powers the electric motor. FCEVs are more expensive right now due to the cost of the hydrogen fuel, but as time goes on, they’ll likely come down in price.

Toyota Takes On Tesla

No doubt about it, electric cars (EVs) and hybrids are rapidly becoming a bigger and bigger share of the auto market. Toyota has boldly stepped into this green space offering hybrid versions of popular models including the Prius, Highlander, Corolla and more. Now, the automaker is making another big move with the fully electric bZ4X SUV, which is poised to compete with the ubiquitous Tesla, specifically the Model Y. Peruzzi Toyota in Hatfield, PA is sharing how these two EVs stack up against each other. Tesla has made some unwanted headlines lately, due to a rolling wave of technical headaches. Toyota, on the other hand, has built its brand on a reputation for being consistently reliable. And they apply that same thinking to their bZ4X. When it comes to fuel economy, expect an efficient EPA combined city/hwy estimate of up to 119 MPGe. The electric ranges between the Tesla Model Y and the Toyota bZ4X are nearly identical: Tesla gets 260 miles on a charge while the bZ4X comes in a hairsbreadth away at 252. As electric vehicles (EVs) gain popularity, Toyota is taking a bold move that promises to shake up the entire sector. Currently, Toyota is working on a new solid-state battery that delivers both longer range and faster charging. We’re talking being able to go 750 miles on a single charge then juicing up the battery in under 10 minutes. A recent poll reveals that many drivers are still anxious about range, opting for gas-powered cars for trips over 250 miles. Knowing your EV can go the distance on longer trips will be a game-changer for more eco-friendly vehicles. That same poll also cites consumer frustration over the amount of time it currently takes to charge an EV. Toyota’s new battery will change all that, delivering a full charge in just minutes. Toyota And Tesla Team Up…Kind Of

With the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), there’s also the growing trend of something called “range anxiety.” This means worrying about how far you can go before needing a recharge. Where’s the nearest charging station? How long will it take to top off the battery? Well, Peruzzi Toyota in Hatfield, PA has some great news for folks interested in switching over to an EV. Toyota has announced that it will be adopting the Tesla charging port for its hybrids and EVs, beginning with 2025 models. As more charging stations sprout up across the country, this move by Toyota opens up many more options for EV customers, and provides greater peace of mind, knowing they can pull up to a Tesla station whenever a charge is needed. Toyota is all-in on developing a full range of EV options, from plug-in hybrids to completely battery-run vehicles. However, one more thing that you should know are the three different methods of charging. The first is Basic Charging (aka “Level 1”), where you plug in to a 120-volt power source using a three-prong outlet. This requires anywhere from 40-50 hours to fully charge the battery. Next is a “Level 2” charge requiring a 240-volt source. This is most common, but if you want one at home, it does require installation by a licensed electrician (which can be pricey). However, the charge is speedier (4-10 hours). You’ll find this charging option mostly at workplaces and other public spots. Finally, there’s the fastest charger which is “Level 3.” These are the ones you find at those ever-present Tesla stations. Starting with 2025 models, Toyota EV owners will be able to take advantage of them via the Tesla Connector and be fully charged up in just 20 minutest to an hour.
