4 Essential Tasks for Safe Winter Driving
The rules of driving change in winter. That's obvious from the first moment you slip on ice or snow, but there are also a few other things you should do to prepare for cold weather beyond changing your driving style. Get an Emergency Kit Skidding off the road is bad in any weather, but skidding off the road in winter is worse. Your emergency kit should include items like a warm blanket, road flares, emergency food and water, a snow shovel, and (if you don't already have one) a mobile phone that can call 911. Replace Your Tires You can get tires for any car that have extra traction and grip in slippery conditions. Even if you stick with your current set, you should still check your tire pressure since the air inside will shrink with the cold. Check Your Fluids This means adding antifreeze to the radiator, winter weight (or multi-viscosity) oil, and wiper fluid that won't freeze at 32 degrees, among other things. Check Your Battery Batteries have it rough in freezing and subzero temperatures, which is one reason electronics warn you not to leave them outdoors. Unfortunately, with cars you don't always have a choice, so check your battery and replace it if it's having trouble holding a charge. Whether you have to drive through a full-on snowstorm or whether you simply have to watch out for a layer of ice on the road, driving is much more hazardous in winter than in any other season. Make sure you stay safe by following these winter driving tips.

Is Your Car Winter Ready?
Prepping your car for winter is an essential step for giving you peace of mind when inclement weather sets in. The following winterization guidelines should help get your vehicle road-ready. Have the Car Serviced Now is the time to schedule that preventive maintenance service. A certified technician will inspect the car's battery, thermostat, antifreeze levels, defroster, brakes, and heater, ensuring everything is up to spec. Check the Tires Worn treads can wreak a lot of havoc on winter roads. Be sure your tires are in good shape and, if not, have them replaced. Even better, opt for a set of snow tires. Switch Out the Windshield Wiper Fluid Windshield wiper fluid has a tendency to freeze in cold temperatures unless it's specifically designed to spray in freezing weather. Ask for recommendations at an auto parts store if you're not sure what to buy. Upgrade Your Wiper Blades You'll also want to ensure your windshield has wiper blades designed to cut through ice and snow. Save the regular blades for the rest of the year. Opt for a Wash and Wax A thorough pre-winter car wash and a coat of fresh wax will go a long way toward preventing corrosion and rust that can come from road salt. You'll also want to rinse the vehicle every so often during the winter to wash away the salt and sludge. Prepare your car for the long winter months, and not only will your car get through the season looking like new, but you and your family will stay safe.
5 Tips for Driving in Inclement Weather
Pennsylvania winters can be brutal. When the bitter cold brings on ice and snow, here are some driving tips you'll want to keep in mind: Don't Tailgate Leave about 100 yards between you and the car ahead of you, or about the length of a football field. This is in case the person in front stops suddenly, giving you time to brake on slush or snow. Turn Into a Skid Skidding is sometimes inevitable during the winter, so when you do skid, turn the steering wheel in the direction the car is skidding. Turn the wheel gently, though. Turning into a skid will cancel it out and help you regain control of the vehicle. Don't Brake While Turning Braking while you're turning the steering wheel can cause a spinout. Instead, lightly tap the brakes before a curve and then coast with your foot hovering over the brake until you come out of a turn, then gently tap them again if you need to slow down. Be Extra Careful on Bridges and Overpasses Black ice is hard to spot, but it forms on bridges and overpasses. Make sure you slow down before crossing a bridge and keep plenty of room between you and other drivers. Stay 10 MPH Under the Speed Limit When the roads are poor from snow and ice, it's a good idea to keep your speed at 10 miles per hour under the posted speed limit. Exercising caution will go a long way toward staying safe this winter.
