You may not have thought of Philadelphia as a food destination, but Philly’s multicultural population means you’ll find some interesting food around the city. You just need to know where to go. Here are three of the top ethnic restaurants in Philadelphia.

Marrakesh Restaurant

North African cuisine is bursting in flavor, and Marrakesh Restaurant gives you an authentic taste of Morocco. They serve a communal menu that is meant to be eaten by hand. Servers will bring a bowl of rosewater to wash your hands with before your meal. Eating at Marrakesh is an experience with soft lighting, incense, beautiful rugs and tapestries, colorful cushions, and belly dancers that creates an amazing ambiance.

Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant

If you like spicy food, you’ll enjoy the great flavors of Ethiopian food. Abyssinia is great for vegetarians, as many Ethiopian dishes use vegetables, lentils, and beans. Ethiopia is home to Muslim, Christian, and Jewish populations, so pork and shellfish are seldom used in Ethiopian cuisine. Most Ethiopian meals are flavored with berbere (a fragrant spice blend) and eaten with injera (a crepe-like flatbread with a sourdough taste).

Zahav

The late celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain, praised chef Michael Solomonov’s culinary skills on his visit to Philly in 2012. Zahav’s meze plates include the tastiest creamy hummus, vegetables like their deliciously seasoned fried cauliflower, and grilled skewers of meat served with laffa bread baked in a wood-fired taboon. Complement your meal with a superb glass of Israeli wine.

There’s nothing wrong with a good ol’ cheesesteak sandwich, but if you’re looking to explore Philly’s ethnic side, these three restaurants make a good start.
