Many people can’t wait to escape the summer heat for the cool, crisp air of the fall. The foliage attracts the leaf peepers, and football season is in full swing. It is important for drivers to be cautious in the fall. Though we haven’t reached the icy roads of winter yet, there are many hazards to watch out for. Pennsylvania Toyota is warning of the dangers of fall driving in hopes of reducing accidents this year.

Watch for Kids

Fall means back to school time. Be aware of children exiting school buses and crossing the street. This is especially true on your morning commute to work and your way back home in the evening.

Deer

Not only do kids have a chance of darting out into traffic but so do deer. If you live near woods be on the lookout for deer that are in mating season and migrating to new locations. Be especially cautious at night when they are harder to see.

Fog

As the temperatures go down, the chance of morning fog goes up. Remember never to use your high beams in fog because it will bounce back at you. Use fog lights or low beams at all times. Reduce your speed and the distance between you and the car you are following.

Leaves

The colors of the foliage can be gorgeous, but once they hit the ground it’s a whole other story. When leaves covering the road get wet, they can become as slippery as ice. Proceed with caution to avoid skidding. Remember that leaves will cover potholes and other hazards on the road too. Watch out for leaf peepers who may not be paying full attention to the road as they admire the beautiful colors around them.
