It’s that time of year again when children are returning to school.  Ensuring their safety in navigating to and from school must be a top priority for all driving.  Toyota dealer near Philadelphia shares some pointer to make sure that both motorists and pedestrians can navigate through school zones in the safest way possible.

Expect the unexpected.  When you are in a school zone, be aware that children may come from anywhere.  They don’t always follow the rules and you don’t want a child not adhering to the school rules to become a casualty of an unaware driver.

Watch Your Stopping.  Make sure that you always come to a complete stop at any crosswalk or sign.  Even if you see nothing in the immediate distance, never slowly roll through it. Make sure that your wheels are completely stopped and that you are aware of any activity that is surrounding you.

Strictly Adhere to the Speed Limit.  This should be common sense to all drivers, particularly in a school zone.  The faster you are going, the more difficult it is to stop quickly.  If a child darts out into the road, it is critical that you have adequate time to avoid striking them.

Do Not Drive Distracted.  Particularly in a school zone, make sure that you are not dividing your attention between driving and tasks such as changing radio stations or using your cell phone.  All of these tasks serve to distract the driver and reduce awareness and reaction time.

Be Aware of School Buses.  Never pass a school bus on the right side and, as most state laws require, if a school bus is stopped on the opposite side of the road, you should also stop.  Not obeying this guideline can not only have legal ramifications but can have catastrophic results.

Understanding and awareness of these basic safety rules and guidelines can help to ensure that both children and drivers safely co-exist as school time rolls around again.
