Even though the technology of Toyota hybrids like the Camry, Corolla and Highlander, is always advancing, they still have batteries. And sometimes those batteries need an assist to get going.

Can you jumpstart a hybrid battery if it dies? The answer is, “yes,” and Peruzzi Toyota in Hatfield, PA is here to walk you through the simple steps.

Hybrid batteries aren’t a whole lot different than the kind you’ll find in a gas-powered Toyota. Some of the things that can result in a dead battery is a loose terminal connection. Give them a check, obviously when the car is turned off. As with a gas vehicle, any electric-powered parts of the car will drain your battery if they’re left on. So, check that your cabin lights are off, and doors are completely closed. Finally, very cold temperatures can do a number on the 12-volt hybrid battery by slowing its internal chemistry.

OK, so you go to start your hybrid and find it’s dead. Jump starting it is almost identical to re-juicing a battery in a regular car. Start with a few precautions: be sure the car is parked on a level surface. You can use regular jumper cables, just be sure that they’re not touching unless disconnected.

Now, place the positive clamp (red) on the positive terminal of your dead battery. Place the other positive clamp on the positive terminal of the battery that will be juicing you up.

Place the negative clamp (black) on the negative clamp of your battery and attach the other negative clamp to the functioning battery.

Start the vehicle with the working battery and let it run for a few minutes. Next, start up your hybrid. Remove the negative clamps from both cars, then the positive ones.

A dead battery doesn’t have to ruin your day. Use these quick steps to get going again.
